What is Wix Headless? A practical guide for business owners
Wix Headless lets you use Wix as the backend of your business — the CMS, bookings, store, forms, members and the dashboard your team already knows — while the website your visitors see is your own code. Wix stops drawing the pages; it supplies the data and the business logic behind them.
That one change explains everything else about it: why developers like it, why it can be excellent for SEO, and why most small businesses still don't need it.
How "headless" works, in plain terms
A normal Wix site has two halves glued together. The back (where you add a product, publish a blog post or take a booking) and the front (the pages people see, laid out in the Wix editor). With Wix Headless the two are separated:
Wix keeps the back. Your CMS collections, Wix Stores, Wix Bookings, Wix Blog, Wix Forms, members and payments all keep running in the Wix dashboard.
The front becomes an application. A developer builds the website in a framework and it reads from Wix through APIs. Nobody lays out pages in an editor any more.
Your team's day-to-day doesn't change: they still add a blog post or a booking slot in the Wix dashboard, and it appears on the site. What changes is that the design and page structure live in code.
Wix-managed vs self-managed headless
Wix offers two ways to run it:
Wix-managed headless — Wix hosts and runs the frontend for you, handles builds and deployments, and sets up authentication. Wix-managed projects are built on Astro. This is the simpler path, and it's what our own site runs on.
Self-managed headless — you host the frontend yourself (Vercel, Netlify, AWS and similar) in any framework and connect it to Wix's APIs. It makes sense when you already have hosting and a deployment pipeline you're committed to.
Wix also supports frontends in React, Vue, Svelte and Solid, and it's designed to connect to AI coding tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex and Gemini CLI.
What does Wix Headless cost?
According to Wix, connecting a frontend to Wix Headless is free. The free tier includes the headless CMS, bookings, events, ecommerce setup, SEO features and the business dashboard, and hosting, CDN delivery and SSL are included.
You move to a Wix Premium plan when you need to accept payments, connect a custom domain or use in-depth analytics. Wix charges no API fees and has no developer tier — you pay the same way any Wix user does. Current plan prices are on wix.com/plans.
The real cost is the build: someone has to design and develop the frontend, and maintain it when the design changes. That's where headless is more expensive than a template site — and why it should be a deliberate choice.
Wix Headless vs Wix Studio
Who draws the pages — Wix Studio: Wix, from what you design in the editor. Wix Headless: your own code.
Who can change the design — Wix Studio: your team, in the editor. Wix Headless: a developer.
Content editing — Wix Studio: Wix dashboard. Wix Headless: Wix dashboard (unchanged).
Control of markup, rendering, structured data — Wix Studio: limited to what the editor exposes. Wix Headless: complete.
Custom backend endpoints — Wix Studio: Velo, within the platform. Wix Headless: your own API routes.
Build cost — Wix Studio: lower. Wix Headless: higher.
Most businesses are better served by Wix Studio: it's faster to build and your team can restyle it themselves. Headless earns its cost when you need something the editor genuinely can't give you.
When Wix Headless is worth it
Search and AI visibility matter a lot. A server-rendered headless frontend sends complete HTML to every crawler — including AI crawlers that don't run JavaScript — with structured data and metadata you control page by page.
You need custom backend behaviour. API endpoints, request-time redirects, integrations with your other systems.
The frontend is shared with another product, or you need performance a site builder won't reach.
You're building with AI coding tools and want a real business backend (payments, bookings, CMS) instead of building one from scratch.
When it isn't
Your team needs to change layouts themselves, often.
The site is mostly content and a good template would do.
Nobody — in-house or an agency on retainer — will own the codebase.
In those cases headless adds cost and fragility and returns nothing for it.
Is Wix Headless good for SEO?
It can be considerably better than a template site, because you control the markup: server-rendered HTML, per-page titles and descriptions, your own structured data, your own sitemap and redirects. It can also be worse — if the frontend is built as a client-rendered app that ships an empty page to crawlers. The platform doesn't decide this; the build does.
Our own site is the example: it's a Wix Headless build on Astro, and how we built it explains what that made possible.
Frequently asked questions
Is Wix Headless free?
Connecting is free, including the CMS, bookings, ecommerce setup and dashboard. A Premium plan is needed to take payments, use a custom domain and get in-depth analytics.
Can my team still edit content?
Yes. Content stays in the Wix dashboard and publishes without a developer. Only design changes need code.
Can an existing Wix site move to headless?
Yes. Content stays where it is; the frontend is rebuilt, and old URLs should be 301-redirected to their new addresses so the site keeps its search history.
Do I need a developer?
For the frontend, yes — or an AI coding tool used by someone who can review what it produces.
