Answer Engine Optimisation: getting cited in AI Overviews and ChatGPT
A growing share of research now ends before anyone clicks a website. Google answers in an AI Overview. ChatGPT summarises. The user gets what they needed and moves on.
That is a genuine threat to businesses that depend on organic traffic — and an opportunity for the ones that adapt early. Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of being the source those systems quote.

What is Answer Engine Optimisation?
AEO is optimising content so that AI-driven answer systems — Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot — cite your page as the source when they answer a question in your field. It overlaps heavily with SEO but optimises for extraction and citation rather than for a click.
AEO is not separate from SEO
Worth saying plainly, because much of what is written about AEO implies you need a whole new discipline. You do not. AI systems overwhelmingly draw from pages that already rank well and are already crawlable. Good technical SEO remains the entry ticket.
What changes is what makes a page quotable once it is eligible.
Answer the question in the first two sentences
Pages that get cited state the answer immediately and then expand. Pages that build to a conclusion over eight paragraphs do not, because there is no clean passage to extract.
This runs against a lot of conventional content advice about hooks and narrative build-up. For informational queries, lead with the answer.
Be specific enough to be worth quoting
Generic advice is not citable, because a hundred other pages say the same thing. Specifics are: a number, a threshold, a named process, a real constraint.
"Improve your page speed" is not quotable. "Largest Contentful Paint above 2.5 seconds is where we start losing mobile conversions" is.
Structure so a machine can parse it
One clear question per heading, phrased the way people ask it.
Short, self-contained paragraphs that survive being lifted out of context.
Lists and tables for anything enumerable.
Structured data stating what the page is, who wrote it and what entity it belongs to.
Entity clarity matters more than it used to
AI systems reason about entities — businesses, people, places — not just strings of keywords. If your organisation is not described clearly and consistently across your site, your schema and the places that reference you, you are harder to cite with confidence.
In practice: consistent naming, a proper Organization schema, and the same details wherever your business appears. This is closely related to the structured data work in a modern web build.
Does AEO actually work?
Yes, and we can point at it. For Urban Liaison, a DTCP and CMDA approvals consultancy in Tamil Nadu, the same programme that took them to first position for seven search terms also got them cited in Google AI Overviews and surfaced in ChatGPT answers.
Those are research-heavy queries where buyers ask questions rather than type keywords — exactly where answer engines took over first. The full method is in how we ranked them first position for seven terms.
Will being cited bring traffic?
Not always, and it is worth being honest about that. Sometimes the user gets their answer and never visits. The value is in queries where the answer creates a need for a specialist — there, being named as the source is worth more than a blue link in position four.
Where to start
If you already rank reasonably well, AEO is mostly a restructuring job rather than a rebuild: lead with answers, tighten your headings, add the specifics, fix your entity markup.
If you do not rank yet, AEO is premature — fix the technical SEO foundations first, because answer engines are drawing from pages that already rank.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
They describe the same shift with different emphasis. Answer Engine Optimisation focuses on being the cited source when a system answers a direct question. Generative Engine Optimisation focuses more broadly on how your brand is represented across generated responses, including comparisons and recommendations where no single question was asked. The underlying work is the same: answer-first structure, specific claims, consistent entity markup.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No. AI systems overwhelmingly draw from pages that already rank and are already crawlable, so technical SEO remains the entry ticket. AEO changes what makes a page quotable once it is eligible, not whether it is eligible in the first place.
Will FAQ schema get me rich results in Google?
Not any more, in most cases. Google restricted FAQ rich results to government and health sites in 2023. FAQ markup is still worth adding because it helps answer engines parse and cite your content — but expect the benefit in AI Overviews and assistants, not in the classic search listing.
How do I know if I am being cited?
Ask the questions your buyers ask directly in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and see who gets named. It is manual, but it is the most reliable signal available today, and more honest than tools claiming to measure AI visibility precisely.
Does being cited actually bring traffic?
Not always. Sometimes the user gets their answer and never visits. The value concentrates in queries where the answer creates a need for a specialist — there, being named as the source is worth more than a blue link in position four.
